Fortune: Toby and his mother journey over the continental divide in hopes to get away from there current abuser, Roy, and become rich from mining.
Uncool: Having been raised in a home with constant abuse, Toby's identity was taken away leaving him wanting to be other people.
A whole new deal: Having moved to get a new identity, Toby finds himself right back where his old life left off, being undermined by an insecure man.
Citizenship in the home: The bond between Toby and Champion gets stronger, as Toby realizes Champion fulfills one thing he has been missing, friendship.
Citizenship in the School: Knowing that he hasn't been good at school, Toby fakes his letters of recommendation trying to cover up his bad grades.
1-Fortune: By running away from their problems Tobys and his mother are only delaying the time whent hey will have to face them.
2-Uncool: Terry, Terry and Toby are all afriad of being outsiders and are willing to be a part of pretty much anything to prevent that.
3-A Whole New Deal: Although Toby thinks that living with Dwight will give him a fresch new start he soon realizes that Dwight is just more of the same.
4-Citizenship in the Home: Despite Dwqights abusive behavoir Norma and Skipper have become kind people.
5-Citizenship in the Home: Toby feels that if he could become a part of the school his brother recomended, it would solve his problems.

Toby and his mother cross the continental divide in an attempt to create a new life for themselves and to separate themselves from Roy.
Uncool:
Toby sees himself in his two friends Terry and Terry, and they band together because they all have a single mother and a hard life and want something more.
A whole New Deal:
Toby sees Dwight true harsh personality and realizes that his life was going to get harder than it was with just his mother and him.
Citizenship in the Home:
Though Toby’s bond with Dwight did not become stronger he has found people like Norma, Champion and Arthur who care about him.
Citizenship in the School:
Toby is offered a chance to get away from his life in Chinook by applying to boarding schools with his father and brother’s help.
Fortune- Toby and his mother drive over the Continental Divide because they seek change from their lives.
Uncool- Toby dresses up in “cool” outfits and poses in mirror but he never is cool.
A Whole New Deal- Toby feels that he has to go live with Dwight and that there is no other option.
Citizenship in the Home- Dwight takes Toby’s money and occupies his time with tasks like shucking chestnuts in an attempt to fully control him.
Citizenship in the School- Since Toby just wants to belong, he hangs out with people that cause trouble.
Fortune: When Toby and Rosemary witness the truck falling of the cliff, it represents there life, spinning out of control.
Uncool: Toby, Taylor, and Silver try to be cool by ruining someone else’s coolness and success.
A Whole New Deal: Toby is trying to get a new life by moving in with Dwight, he soon realizes that this is not the life he was looking for.
Citizenship in the Home: Dwight takes Toby’s money from his forced job and makes him do pointless little tasks for him.
Citizenship in the School: Toby lies to Geoffrey about his grades and achievements and starts to believe that what he is saying is the truth.
