Toby and Rosemary’s crossing over the continental divide made them feel more fortunate, that this was the beginning of a new and better life, they do not know they just crossed into a more dreadful world.
The truck Toby and Rosemary witness driving off the cliff right after they cross the continental divide symbolizes Toby's and Rosemary's life by showing them crossing over into change but foreboding their lives about to go out of control.
The easy cross over the continental divide did not ensure Toby and his mother any luck for where they should end up living.
Toby and Rosemary cross the continental divide looking for a new and better life only to discover that this new life is worse than the previous.
Starting over can be hard, which is what Toby Wolff and his mother Rosemary come to realize as they try to steer their life towards a better and luckier one.
Toby and his Mother's car keeps breaking down along their way to Utah, which is a symbol for the journey that they make together and the problems they face along the way with men, money, happiness, and finding themselves.
When Toby and his Mother crossed the continental divide, they had no idea how many bumps, curves, and twists there would be before they finally reached where they were headed.
"These are the days of spring when the sky is filled with the odor of lilac, when darkness becomes desire, and there is nothing that does not wish to be born; days when the fate of the present is a breezy fullness, when the world's great gift for fiction gilds even the dirt we walk on, and we feel we could live forever while knowing of course that we can't."
